Diamond Open Access in Sweden

Diamond Open Access is defined as the publishing and reading of research without paywalls. Publications made openly available under a CC license should be peer-reviewed to ensure research quality. Researchers should own and manage these publishing channels, and publications should not be for profit.

This website describes the work of the Swedish Node for Diamond Open Access, a collaborative national organisation that promotes and strengthens cooperation on open access academic publications and coordinates support and financing for non-commercial book and journal publications. Our aim is to make research results more accessible to everyone. To support this, the project is connected to, and part of, other similar initiatives coordinated by the European Diamond Capacity Hub.

Points of departure

In 2025, we distributed a survey to Editors of Swedish scholarly journals to learn more about the conditions under which they operate. We learned that the landscape is diverse: while some journals thrive, others are in a precarious position, with insufficient resources to run an open, trustworthy, high-quality, and equitable publishing entity. Based on editor feedback and input from the Action Plan for Diamond Open Access, we can identify three areas for improvement in services for journals seeking to move toward Diamond Open Access.

Sustainable funding model

We are currently investigating a national, long-term, sustainable funding model to create equal opportunities for journals to remain open without charges for authors or readers.

Efficient and collaborative support

Higher educational institutions in Sweden are encouraged to work together to serve as efficient contact points for open publishing. This will be coordinated to ensure organisations share resources and expertise.

Improving quality of scholarly publishing

Ensuring a thriving academic publishing culture includes supporting editors with technical standards and editorial best practices. A national effort to work with the Diamond Open Access Standard will underpin this.
